So I run downstairs. Right across the creek. And I had the money to do it, and I said, You know, let me do it.. Burke: I was thinking about getting a big home, having a home, and what I would want in itthe paintings, what kind of furniture, carpets, everything. Q: So those things that you got later on, afterthey didnt come from Europe. There were some gorgeous mansions. Yes. Yes, by the time I got to do all that I had no money left. You could imagine what the mansion looked like. These are those Persian carpets. And the backyard is beautiful. And it was very much built like this house. It would have been spectacular but greed set in, and thats what they did. If you want to come in a business with me, John, lets make into a beautiful restaurant. So he said, Okay, Ive never owned a restaurant, but Id be willing to try it, George. So I said, Well, John, youre gonna have to put a lot of money in it because you have all the money, as being who you are. But she used to wear three, four dresses and she smelled like an old goat! Anyway, I said, Oh boy, did I have a scary dream. I told her my dream. I mean, one year, the oil bill here was $11,000. And she was living here all by herself. I thought for sure that would never go. Its still there. He was in the Air Force. I think so. He appreciated it. You are to get out. Theres too much business going on here. So were talking about this and talking about this. Now theyre worth a couple hundred-dollars apiece. Most of them were like china and vases, such like that. So I go downstairs. And I went in and I noticed my big box was gone. Q: And you said that you restored the garden there too? Burke: Oh, when I bought the house, everybody told me, Oh, what are you buying that old crap for? Well, I didnt say I bought it because I got it practically for nothing because they couldnt get rid of it. Q: Andif this is something that you cant discuss, let me knowbut, for example, if you decide to repaint, like you did in this room, is that something that the board fundraises for? And I said, What in the hell is this doing in my house? So I opened up the lid and there was this old lady laying in there, with this big lace collar around her neck, and her hair was puffed up behind her head, like that, was all gray. And then finally I had a man come in and talking to me about how hes bought a place on Staten Island that hes opening up a place like Saks only not as nice. Or is there a way for things to be changed? So while I used to work then with them, and then I decided, this is not for me. Burke: I went and I was stationed in England, and I loved being in England. So coming back to it was a change. Burke: Okay. [laughs] And I lived there for a long time. So when I got it, of course, the old kitchen was inI had knocked it down because it was all falling apart. But I mean, that wasthe holes, the plaster gone. And its three little girls sitting on a bench with big baskets of flowers in front of them. Thats what I wanted. So all the big mansions were built with outside kitchens. Burke: Yes, and I had a beautiful apartment for years in St. George. What was. And thats where she was. She said, You saw her in your dream. I said, Holy shit, I said, you think that was her? She said, It could have been her. I said, Then she went like that and chased me out of her house. She said, That was her. And so people saidthey took all the horses and they moved to New Jersey. They were gorgeous. 6389 Amboy Road. He said he believes that whoever was in that other house, really didnt want people there. Then upstairs, was all the bedrooms. Its all stay in here. Then there was the main hall that went through, just like this: door, front door, back door. Burke: I think that waswhod ya call-it got me involved with that. Theyd come out and Id say, Look, I can get you this. So I picked up this one building that had a little old bar next to it. While stationed in England, he studied interior design and architectural history and began to collect antiques through estate sales and flea markets, focusing on ceramics, paintings, light fixtures, and many other decorative items from the Victorian era. Things like that? The front porch was up high. And I dream that I heard some noise. And she was laying with her arms, like that. She was the girl who hired me, and she ran the big Sherwin Williams store. What a damn dream, there she was, laying in her coffin there, with her finger at me. Then she got to the point where she couldnt keep it anymore. And thats where we are today. And I didnt realize it because I was always working. And the basement was beautiful, where you can walk out onto the porch and out into the garden. So this house tells a particular story, a long history, but it cant tell the history of the other houses because they were so different. Daller: The stables. It has to stay exactly as an old plantation house. She stated, George, I want you to save my house, and agreed to sell the house for a feasible sum in exchange for his promise to restore it. But when they were building houses, if you had a third story, your taxes went out of sight! She was great, I loved her. What the hell is this? Daller: Well, he hopes that Historic House Trust and the Parks Department work hand in hand and maintaining itthat theyll maintain it as a museum. Daller: Oh, theOh God now, whats it called? And theyd come out and Id get involved with them. Q: Can you give me an example of one of the things that you worked on together in the house? Burke: But what were we going into before I got into the architecture? Shit. So I went around to all the nursesof course, I was in the medical departmentand I asked all the nurses, What are you doing with your stamps? And I had a little house in Tottenville so I decided, well, Ill move into this big housein hereand Ill get rid of all the property that I have in Tottenville. So I paid it off and bought it in cash, with the cash. Of course, she loved the smell of lilacs. And my uncle came in and was part of the whole group. And these roofs had big arches, like this. And my neighbor across the street, who had lived there forever, she comes over again with a couple of little plants for me. The kitchen was never in the basement. And I went around and we all hadyou were only allowed to buy two bottles of wine and a bottle of whiskey, or something. But he was excellent. Its, all the numbers are accounted for. I grew up loving it and always having it, and my mother was great with it. Q: Yes. Burke: Okay. The stables, everything has to remain the same. My mother and his wife never got along too well. I mean, after it was finished, who cared? And when they werent in the house, they would go and buy them at the stores, and there was always lilacs in the house. Burn it down, put a candle in the middle of the hall. And all the time when all the lilacs would come in the spring, and the whole place would smell of lilacs, its gorgeous, still is. That place took off like you couldnt believe. I mean, we had clocks, baby-Ben clocks, hanging in apartments. As a young adult, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the medical department, spending time in locations across Europe and Alaska. Burke: And all the others like it, well, I can remember, on the other side of the pond over there, going alongthe mansions that were over there. Because the problem was is that my uncle was paying for everything in the househe was paying for the heating, he was paying all the utilities, paying all the bills. I said I was the only person at that timemy uncle gave me my sweet sixteen there, and all my friends were invited to come formal. And the last time I went there, there was all houses built in it. And as I said, I was in the military up there and we werent a big group of military, it was like a small base. And they were good investments. You come out and take over the boys and mens department in the store. I said, Thats fine. Hes done it for forty-plus years, now its time to give back. So itll be part of Staten Island that people, maybe fifty years from now when theres not a spot left, theyll all come out and theyll look and say, Wow, this is what it used to be.. Burke: Sure. I found a beautiful place in Tottenville and I opened it and called it the Tidewater Inn. So thats where I got most of the stuff thats here in the house today. And you can ask[gesturing to Daller], Daller: Everybody got something. And I just got a call from all my lady friends saying that my house is falling apart. I got one or two things out of it. So we lived there, and it was a big courtyard and there were four buildings and the center courtyard was all grass. Theyre all gone. And that painting of me, thats upstairs in my bedroomdid you ever see it? And when I seen it all over there, and when I seen the British people were poor as church mice, they were selling everything. Too bad that there wasnt somebody with a brain. And the porch, I dont thinkone end of it, you wouldnt dare walk on because the whole thing would have collapsed. Daller: And when he wasnt doing that, he was horseback riding because he loved to ride and thats kind of segued himself to the Seguine House and to Bess. So I went down and I just went around and everything I seenall the stuff you see hanging in this house, most of it come from me going around and wheeling and dealing in, you might as well say, the black market. Luis was great. And in the summer, he sits outside, enjoys the outdoors, enjoys the lawn, the grounds. So here I was with all this stuff, sending it home to my family, sending it to my sisters. I woke up with a sweat. In fact, I think it was just landmarked wasnt it? Would you sell me the acres in the front? Burke: Oh, I forgot about that. The income from the Seguine Equestrian Center, which stables some twenty horses a stone's throw from the mansion, helps. And she used to drink all the whiskey like crazy. Thats what it is. And there was a whole other floor, another story, and its built with the French style, in the French mansard. And if you were wearing them and you went and got in your car and turned the heater on, you smelled like piss. And that was it. So I made sure it was filled in with dirt the rest of the way, so I wouldnt have that water getting in the basement. But I was glad that I got this. And when they got level, he screamed, Okay, George, theyre level, theyre level! And then I put a big postI put a big cement thing on the floor. And I said, well, Im going to retire.
